Il primo speaker ha presentato il ruolo centrale svolto dal FMI al fine di sostenere all countries, particularly those in developing countries, in achieving economic stability. La conferenza è proseguita con l’intervento di alcuni difensori dei diritti umani provenienti da diversi paesi, i quali hanno raccontato la loro esperienza nella difesa dei diritti di donne, bambini disabili e immigrati. Ad esempio, Beatrice Achaleke, presidente del Consiglio Europeo delle Donne di Origine Africana, ha messo in luce le discriminazioni a cui sono sottoposte le donne di origine africana in Europa, dove spesso sono considerate come “ospiti indesiderate”, anche se cittadine europee. Dora Alonzo, membro del Parlamento dei bambini e adolescenti in Guatemala, ha invece evidenziato la necessità di dar voce ai diritti dei bambini, compito che la sua associazione cerca di svolgere dando loro la possibilità di imparare a riconoscere i propri diritti e di espimere il loro punto di vista.

Agli interventi dei relatori è seguito un dibattito al quale hanno preso parte sia i rappresentanti dei vari governi sia delle ONG.

La giornata si è poi conclusa con la particolare esibizione di Nelson Ebo, cantante d’opera angolano. La conferenza nel suo complesso ha lanciato un chiaro messaggio che mira a sensibilizzare la responsabilità di ognuno: alziamo la nostra voce per dire basta alla discriminazione!

Le scrivo per raccontarLe come ho vissuto la splendida esperienza qui a Ginevra.

Tutto è cominciato con una richiesta di collaborazione per il VIDES, avrei volentieri apportato il mio contributo partendo anche come volontaria. Ma il corso degli eventi ha voluto che io facessi la più incredibile delle esperienze presso il Suo Ufficio e la sede delle Nazioni Unite. Spesso mi domando se davvero sono così brava nel costruirmi un futuro, nel realizzare un percorso che corrisponde ai miei meriti, o se c’è una forza superiore che sta guidando tutto. Ogni cosa calza a pennello, tutto al momento giusto e nel modo giusto. Io che da sempre ho guardato con fascino i Diritti Umani ho avuto l’occasione di vederli da vicino, di incontrare chi ne decide le sorti, chi si batte perché vengano rispettati e chi li difende con le unghie e con i denti. Il mio entusiasmo, forse a volte eccessivo, stentavo a contenerlo, era motivato dal fatto che proprio a me fosse stata data la possibilità di volare a Ginevra.
