The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva has celebrated this year the Human Rights Day, in commemoration of the December 10, 1948, when the Declaration was adopted Universal Rights Humans. For this occasion we organized a conference on the fight carried on by the defenders of human rights against discrimination.
The meeting was opened with a welcome from the mayor of Geneva, Sandrine Salerno, which has renewed the support of the city to the United Nations and the international community for the protection of human rights.
Later, the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, has stressed the important role played by human rights defenders. Over the years, some personalities have won a leading role in the collective for their commitment and their passion in the defense of human rights, among them include, for example, Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela. But we must not forget that there are many others who, although not as well known, acting with the same dedication. Their work is critical when you consider that every day millions of women, indigenous people, persons belonging to minorities, the disabled and immigrants, among others, are victims of discrimination. The human rights defenders devote their lives to others, often risking their own. Although there are no precise data about it, many of them are themselves discriminated against, tortured, imprisoned or killed for their impegno a difesa dei più vulnerabili. Questo indica una mancanza di informazione, ma anche e soprattutto la necessità di difendere i difensori dei diritti umani, compito che spetta alle Nazioni Unite, ma che deve essere sostenuto anche dalla società civile.
La conferenza è proseguita con l’intervento di alcuni difensori dei diritti umani provenienti da diversi paesi, i quali hanno raccontato la loro esperienza nella difesa dei diritti di donne, bambini disabili e immigrati. Ad esempio, Beatrice Achaleke, presidente del Consiglio Europeo delle Donne di Origine Africana, ha messo in luce le discriminazioni a cui sono sottoposte le donne di origine africana in Europa, dove spesso sono considerate come “ospiti indesiderate”, anche se cittadine europee. Dora Alonzo, membro del Parlamento dei bambini e adolescenti in Guatemala, ha invece evidenziato la necessità di dar voce ai diritti dei bambini, compito che la sua associazione cerca di svolgere dando loro la possibilità di imparare a riconoscere i propri diritti e di espimere il loro punto di vista.
Agli interventi dei relatori è seguito un dibattito al quale hanno preso parte sia i rappresentanti dei vari governi sia delle ONG.
La giornata si è poi conclusa con la particolare esibizione di Nelson Ebo, cantante d’opera angolano. La conferenza nel suo complesso ha lanciato un chiaro messaggio che mira a sensibilizzare la responsabilità di ognuno: alziamo la nostra voce per dire basta alla discriminazione!
